Gesta takes the reader to Las Palmas at the end of the 16th century, a period marked by political, religious, and military tensions. In that context, the story of a young Morisco slave girl and a Christian youth emerges, their fates intertwined with the arrival of the powerful Dutch fleet commanded by Pieter van der Does. Divided into three chapters —The Wait, The Defense, and The Counterattack— the novel reconstructs the days in which militiamen, engineers, religious figures, and citizens defended the island with a determination that would shape collective memory.
The novel stands out for its ability to recover historical figures such as Fray Basilio de Peñalosa, Cairasco de Figueroa, Próspero Casola, or Alonso Alvarado, weaving them into a narrative that blends rigorous research with literary sensibility.
The author is a figure deeply linked to the preservation of Canarian historical heritage. Domínguez was a professor of Philosophy of Law at the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, directed the Historical Heritage area of the Canary Islands Government and, subsequently, the Historical Heritage Service of the Cabildo of Gran Canaria, a career reflected in the documentary rigor that characterizes him.
