SYNOPSIS: The word Imazighen translates as the Berbers, who are the people belonging to a group of indigenous North African ethnicities, a territory called Tamazgha. They range from the Canary Islands and the continental Atlantic coast to the Siwa Oasis in Egypt, and from the coast of the Mediterranean Sea to the Sahel. Gnawa music is one of the main genres of Moroccan folklore. The instruments used are the guembri, a three-string instrument with a bass-like sound; the tbel, a drum played with a curved stick; and the qraqeb, the distinctive metal castanets. Gnawa music is very rhythmic and is characterized by a chant in which a lead voice makes invocations and is answered by the choir, over a simple guembri melody. Imazighen move in this music with respect for tradition but without letting it fuse with other more contemporary trends such as jazz, rock or even other root-based musics. TICKET SALES:
