They are celebrated by deciding which stories still need to be told. With El último presidente, Teatro La República does not commemorate an anniversary: it settles a debt. A debt to democratic memory, to the complexity of our history, and to a figure, Don Juan Negrín López, who has been systematically minimized, distorted, or silenced. From its beginnings, the company has understood theater as a space for debate in the deepest sense of the term: a place where the past dialogues with the present and demands the audience to take a stand. Bringing Negrín — last president of the Second Spanish Republic — to the stage is not a nostalgic gesture nor a comfy revisionist exercise. It is an uncomfortable decision. And precisely for that reason, it is necessary. The play does not aim to explain history, but to make it resonate. It offers neither a tidy nor soothing biography, but an immersion into the mind of a man trapped between extreme responsibility and exile, between scientific reason and the brutality of political collapse. In that fragmented, almost broken space, Negrín appears not as a statue, but as a dilemma: the misunderstood leader, the intellectual compelled to decide when every decision entails an irreparable loss. Because the past does not go away. It stays, it transforms, it returns. The shadows of exile, defeat, and forgetting continue to project onto our present. We live in times of noise, quick slogans, and simplified narratives, where complexity is uncomfortable and doubt is seen as weakness. In this context, El último presidente stands as an act of cultural resistance. Against oblivion, memory. Against polarization, thought. Against simplism, nuance. Theater, when it takes responsibility, does not indoctrinate: it unsettles. It does not provide closed answers: it raises questions. What does democracy mean today? What price does commitment have? What do we do, as a society, with those who defended reason when reason seemed lost? El último presidente is not just a play about Negrín. It is a warning. And also an invitation. To look at history without fear, to embrace its contradictions, and to understand that memory is not a luxury of the past, but an indispensable tool for the present. SYNOPSIS: José Félix presents this musical proposal devoted to Portuguese fado, the result of intensive study of the famous Lisbon genre. In the recital “Fado nocturno,” the Tenerife-born singer takes us on a journey through the purest fadista tradition and the various classic styles that this music contains, thanks to careful study of traditional styles and the experience gained in Lisbon’s fado houses circuit alongside local musicians. With only a Spanish guitar for accompaniment and a minimalist musical approach that prioritizes the emotion of the word, José Félix guides us through the stories that Lisbon’s songs keep within them, as we witness the ritual of introspection necessary for fado to emerge in its most genuine and unembellished form.

Él. De las tinieblas a la luz (He. From Darkness to Light) comes to Teatro Leal in La Laguna on 21 November 2026. Inspired by the life and work of Mercedes Pinto, the production celebrates one of the leading voices in Canarian and Latin American culture. Drawing on her autobiographical novel Él (Him), alongside a selection of her poetry and personal testimony, the production reimagines her work as a contemporary opera. Set to music by Laura Vega, it explores violence, resistance and freedom, and the power of writing to change lives and keep memories alive.

The municipal areas of Culture, Festivals and Youth organize three activities on October 30 and 31 in La Esperanza and Lomo Pelado. The schedule will begin on Friday, October 30 at 19:00, at the Casa de la Cultura “Carlos Alonso” of El Rosario, with the staging of “Las Voces de El Rosario… nunca olvidan.” On Saturday, October 31, also free of charge, the tent at Plaza del Adelantado will host the Noche de Finados 2026, from 17:00, with a folklore concert and the show “Luz de Ausentes,” created and directed by Óscar Bacallado, and performances by Domingo Rodríguez “El Colorao,” Pedro Manuel Afonso, Marco del Castillo and Ciro Corujo. The CIFE of Lomo Pelado will transform, from 20:00 to 23:00, into the stage of “Mentally Block: Insomnio,” the fifth edition of the popular house of horror that combines creativity, ambiance and collaborative work to offer a special Halloween experience. The activity, organized by the Concejalía de Juventud and the Asociación Dinamización Juvenil El Rosario, is recommended for those over 12 and requires prior registration due to limited spots.
